چکیده

A main limitation of using conceptual models for predicting flow in ungauged catchments is the errors in identified relationships between calibrated conceptual parameters and known (or estimated) catchment descriptors. It is hypothesised here that these errors may be reduced if the modeller does not explicitly identify relationships, but applies all feasible models within a Bayesian averaging scheme. This maintains the information about parameter inter-dependencies obtained as part of local calibration, and also provides a strong basis for integrating various sources of uncertainty into the predicted average flow and associated confidence intervals. A case study of UK catchments provides encouraging results.

Predicting the daily streamflow of ungauged catchments in S.E. Australia by regionalising the parameters of a lumped conceptual rainfall-runoff model

Deriving relationships between catchment-scale hydrologic response and landscape attributes allows the hydrologic response of an ungauged catchment to be predicted from its landscape attributes and climate. In this study, a lumped conceptual rainfall-runoff model was applied at a daily timestep to 16 small (less than 1 km) catchments in the Maroondah region of Victoria, Australia. The six param...

Topological and canonical kriging for design flood prediction in ungauged catchments: an improvement over a traditional regional regression approach?

In the United States, estimation of flood frequency quantiles at ungauged locations has been largely based on regional regression techniques that relate measurable catchment descriptors to flood quantiles. More recently, spatial interpolation techniques of point data have been shown to be effective for predicting streamflow statistics (i.e., flood flows and low-flow indices) in ungauged catchme...

Ensemble predictions of runoff in ungauged catchments

[1] A new approach to regionalization of conceptual rainfall-runoff models is presented on the basis of ensemble modeling and model averaging. It is argued that in principle, this approach represents an improvement on the established procedure of regressing parameter values against numeric catchment descriptors. Using daily data from 127 catchments in the United Kingdom, alternative schemes for...

Improving the flood prediction capability of the Xinanjiang model in ungauged nested catchments by coupling it with the geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph

Improving the predictive capabilities of rainfall-runoff models in ungauged catchments is a challenging task but has important theoretical and practical significance. In this study, we investigated the predictive capabilities of the conceptual Xinanjiang model (XAJ), which is widely used for flood forecasting and simulation in China, in ungauged catchments. We further produced a hybrid rainfall...

Estimating the flood frequency distribution

The goal of this study is to develop an objective methodology for estimating design floods, i.e. the flood peak discharge with return period T , at ungauged river catchments in Iceland. First, a regional flood frequency analysis is presented for estimating the T -year flood peak discharge with fixed duration D, Q(T,D), for poorly gauged and ungauged catchments. This is done by scaling a regiona...
